Kanha Upvan Gaushala Earns GMP Certification After ISO Recognition

Lucknow: The Kanha Upvan Gaushala, operated by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation at Naderganj-Amausi, has achieved another milestone by securing Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification after previously being awarded ISO 9001:2015 certification. The recognition underscores the shelter’s adherence to international standards in management, animal care, and operational systems.

The GMP certificate was granted following a comprehensive inspection of the gaushala’s facilities, management systems, and documentation by an expert team. The application was submitted in February, and a detailed on-site evaluation was conducted last month before the certification was awarded. Officials stated that the recognition reflects the institution’s commitment to maintaining high-quality management practices.

First Major Municipal Gaushala in the State to Receive GMP Recognition

Housing and caring for over 10,000 stray and abandoned cattle, Kanha Upvan has become the first large-scale municipal corporation-run gaushala in Uttar Pradesh to receive GMP certification while managing animal welfare on such a significant scale. Approximately 10,000 cattle are currently sheltered at the facility, where arrangements for feeding, medical care, and overall upkeep are systematically managed.

The gaushala had earlier received ISO certification in 2024, drawing national-level appreciation for its structured operations and animal welfare standards.

Established in 2012

Kanha Upvan was established in 2012 with the inspiration of former Mayor and current Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma to provide organized care and protection for stray cattle. Over the years, the municipal corporation has expanded and modernized the facility to enhance its infrastructure and services.

The GMP certificate, valid for three years, is seen as a result of continued efforts by the state government and the municipal administration toward systematic cattle conservation.

Administrative Efforts Behind the Achievement

The accomplishment was realized under the leadership of Mayor Sushma Kharkwal and Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar. Key contributions were made by Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr. Arvind Kumar Rao and Animal Welfare Officer Dr. Abhinav Verma, whose coordinated efforts strengthened operational standards at the facility.

Apart from sheltering cattle, the gaushala also provides continuous medical care to injured, sick, and accident-affected animals within the municipal area.

Moving Towards Self-Reliance

Kanha Upvan is steadily progressing toward self-sustainability. Cow dung generated at the facility is being utilized for Bio-CNG production, contributing to eco-friendly energy initiatives. Milk produced at the gaushala is first distributed among the children of staff members, and the surplus is sold, generating an estimated monthly income of around ₹3 lakh for the municipal corporation.

Additionally, free education is being provided to the children of cattle caretakers through the Kanha Upvan School, reinforcing the institution’s broader social commitment.

With international certifications now to its credit, Kanha Upvan Gaushala stands as a model for organized cattle welfare and municipal management in the state.
